About

Rui’s art practice is a mix of different mediums and styles. They work between digital art, painting, drawing, and printmaking, allowing cross-medium transformations to create something new. Their experience as a Chinese American influences their artwork and drives their passion to create. Considering themself a storyteller, they seek to build work that retells their life and culture, connecting with other Asian Americans who grew up struggling with their identity. Rui graduated from Willamette University with degrees in Studio Art and Film with a minor in Chinese in 2023. They currently live in Oregon where they were born and raised. Their childhood inspires the themes in Rui's artwork, and they seek to further investigate their cultural traditions.

山城不倒 ShanChen Lane Cat Cafe was a project created from transitioning from a university to a home studio. Wanting to continue with printmaking but no longer having access to a printing press since graduating from undergrad, I experimented with woodblock printing techniques on an American easel wood panel and acrylic paint. This allowed for a more accessible means of creating artwork within a small home studio.
This photograph was taken when I visited 重庆 Chongqing, China in early 2024 for the Lunar Year Festivals. The cat is homed to a lovely cat cafe hidden within the famous 磁器口 Ciqikou Ancient Town

These video projections are illustrations of one of China’s four great classical novels, Journey to the West, used here to express my conflicting memories of childhood, both nostalgic and disconnected, as a Chinese American. This installation is based on 水帘洞 Shuilian Cave from 花果山 Mount Huaguo, the home of 孙悟空Sun Wukong, and additionally an abstraction of a home for myself. The images are created through photo-bashing, a combination of photo editing and digital painting. The mix of photos, an aspect of reality, and paintings that are rooted in imagination embrace my fascination with Chinese mythology.
